Zen-Like Approach

Even though it may be boring to my readers, I'm really enjoying my new outlook on blogging. I've taken a more zen-like approach to it, and I'm way less stressed. I've been enjoying using Cup of Tea as a platform to share my house progress, because it's something that is fun for me and really is what consumes my time and thoughts these days. I might not be getting the volume of comments I did before, but unlike before, I think I'm just fine with that.  Is anyone still reading? I don't know, but I do know that I'm still writing!

Since Cup of Tea has been transitioning into more of a lifestyle blog than a strictly fashion blog, I'm curious to know your suggestions on other lifestyle (particularly design-conscious) blogs to read! My current obsession is Design*Sponge.  Every day I indulge in its inspirational charm that spans the world of design and I love it all. It's like dessert at the end of the day!

Back to my house, here are some small Instagramified updates!

Bathroom sink has finally been installed! Never thought I'd be so excited about such things, but isn't is just lovely?! Yes, yes it is.

New doorbell. I couldn't just get a normal doorbell could I?  No, I like my new gecko friend.

Happy almost Friday :)

Restoring The Closet Door {part one}

One of the things I love about my new house is all of the original 1942 doors. They're one panel, dark stained, with crystal door knobs (that use skeleton keys!) and they have the coolest detailing. I almost have a complete set. However, one of the bedroom closet doors has been replaced with a fake-wood six panel door in white. Ugh. So I took the search for great design into my own hands and ventured down to the Architectural Salvage Warehouse in Detroit on a quest for a replacement door.

And I found one! Hidden in with a huge collection of old doors, windows, and other materials was an almost-match.  So close of a match that if I didn't point out what was different you might never notice.
Update: With closer inspection, it IS an exact match. Even better!

Obviously it's been painted white, but the plan is to get it stripped down and re-stained. What's also cool is that I already have a matching crystal doorknob to put on it. Once completed, no one will ever know the difference.
Update: With closer inspection, it IS an exact match. Even better!

What a neat place to go! The people working there were super helpful and friendly. From their website:
"The Architectural Salvage Warehouse of Detroit (ASWD), a nonprofit salvage and resale organization, was started in response to the tremendous amount of waste being generated in the demolition of houses in Detroit and its suburbs. In 2004, over 2,600 housing units were demolished in Detroit and over 4,000 were demolished across Southeast Michigan... ASWD decided on a mission to save what we could of our historic regional materials, to salvage perfectly good architectural materials and put them in the hands of those who can use them and to create jobs and training for those interested in learning the skills of deconstruction. Our earnings are to go to historic preservation projects that we initiate and in grants to other historic preservation organizations that we partner with in projects."

I can't wait to show off the finished product!

Happy Sunday!

A Yellow Kitchen For Me

While I still don't have any "after" photos for my house projects yet, I will share more "in progress" photos. Today I'm in the kitchen and picking out paint colors again!

As you can see I plan to paint the kitchen and dining room yellow. The question is which yellow?  I think I know which one I'm going with... what do you think?

The bathroom color has been selected and painted.  A couple days ago I had the sink installed too! At least one room is close to being done!

I'll post more updates as I have them!

Happy Thursday!

Green Patchwork Quilt

Yes you're seeing this correctly.  I am updating my blog twice in one week.  Simply amazing.  Anyway, if you read my last post about my dilemma with all of the green paint colors I'm dealing with for my bathroom, here is proof to my designer craziness:

What you see here is a patchwork quilt of green bathroom paint options.  LOOK at that.  I have decided on one though.  It was the very last one I tried.  If I had not liked it, I would have pretty much exhausted my options.

I can't wait until this room is done so I can finally show off some "after" pictures here on Cup of Tea!  In the meantime this "progress" picture will have to do.  Next steps: paint the bathroom one color, install sink and medicine cabinet!  Woo!

Happy Sunday!

50 Shades of Green

Happy 2013!  I'm still here!  And I still plan to post my house projects, but I probably won't do that until they're all done.  I'm diligently photographing each room as changes start to appear so I will have something to blog about.  In the meantime, if you don't already, feel free to follow me on Instagram!  I update that more frequent than Cup of Tea these days.

What have I been up to since my last post a month ago?  Instagram will tell you:

1. Celebrated Christmas and decorated my tree with the cutest ornament I have ever seen: The Puffy Reindeer with Cinnamon Stick Legs.

2. Went ice skating in downtown Detroit.

3. Received The Awakening by Kate Chopin for Christmas this year.  I love this book and it's really hard to find in stores.

4. Dressed in sequins and played Apples to Apples on New Year's Eve!

5. Became obsessed with Downton Abbey!

6. Got very excited that Zooey Deschanel is on the February 2013 issue of Glamour!

7. Aaaaand started painting the walls in my house.  Turquoise in the living room?  Yes!

So there you have it!  My current dilemma is the bathroom color... who knew how hard it would be to pick the right shade of green?  I am a tormented designer.  Sometimes I think life would be way less annoying if I were totally ignorant to color choices.  While usually it's a blessing, right now I'm making myself crazy.  I will soon have sampled the entire green section of the Sherwin Williams paint chip book... not quite, but it feels like it!  My bathroom looks like a patchwork quilt of green!  I could write a book called 50 Shades of Green... sheesh.

Until next time...
